The fuel cell (10) has two fuel cell stacks (12a, 12b) that are connected in series. Each fuel cell stack includes a cell (14) comprising an anode area and a cathode area. A hydrogen transport system comprises supply systems (16a, 16b) for supply hydrogen or hydrogen containing gas mixture to the anode areas of the cells. Discharging systems (18a, 18b) discharge anode exhaust gas from the anode areas of the cells. The discharging systems of the fuel cell stack that is upstream in hydrogen flow direction is connected with the supply systems of the downstream fuel cell stack. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell.
