The device has a smart storage switch (30) including an upstream interface (34) to a host for receiving host commands to access non-volatile memory (NVM) and receiving host data and a host address. A smart storage transaction manager (36) manages transactions from the host. A set of NVM blocks stores host data at a block location identified by a physical block address (PBA) generated by a mapper in a NVM controller, where address mapping is performed at two levels to access the NVM blocks.
