A fuel cell system (2) which has at least one fuel cell stack (4) and is designed for operation using a fuel gas and also a gaseous oxidant, characterized in that the fuel cell system has as component a physically operating oxygen separator (10) supplied with air; in that the delivery side of the oxygen separator for oxygen-reduced gas is connected to the fuel gas intake side of the fuel cell stack and/or to the oxidant intake side of the fuel cell stack, and in that a buffer store (38) for oxygen-reduced gas is connected downstream of the oxygen separator (10).
