<p>Preservation of green fodder.. N--. comprises removing a part of the plant juices of green fodder in the field by compression, pref. at the time of mowing. The moisture content should pref. be reduced to 60-70%. The green fodder is then stored in silos. The method is important in climates where natural drying is hazardous and when artificial drying is too costly for the smaller farmer. Compression in the field halves the water-content and the volume is reduced to less than half. The moisture content can be accurately estimated; smaller silos can be used; the plant-juices are spread over the fields and do not foul silos or the waste-water runs. Harvesting and storage can take place independent of weather conditions. During storage of green fodder with ca 80% moisture content in silos, a large amount of plant juice drips from the fodder. The juice cannot be removed in the normal water courses without further treatment and is also harmful to the ground water. When the green fodder is too dry, it cannot be compressed without enclosing air pockets. When only 60-70% moisture is present to further juice drips from the fodder, and it can be packed firmly into the silos without special apparatus.</p> |
