<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a diffraction element having stable characteristics over a long period of time; a method for manufacturing the same; an optical pickup device; and an optical disk device. <P>SOLUTION: A diffraction element 10 includes a first member 13 and a second member 14 configured to receive light of two wavelengths from a light source 20, and alternately arrayed within the incident surface of light to constitute a diffraction grating 11. The diffraction element 10 transmits the light of one wavelength, and separates the light of the other wavelength to emit it to an optical disk 21. The first member 13 includes a first resin 15, and has predetermined refractive indexes at the two wavelengths. The second member 14 includes a second resin 16 prepared by solving a dye 17 at a molecule level and has light absorption in a predetermined wavelength region. The second member 14 has a refractive index equal to that of the first member 13 at one wavelength, and a refractive index different from that of the first member 13 at the other wavelength.
