<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce processing time and obtain an accurate character recognition result in recognizing characters printed in half-, full-, and double-width characters even if characters are blurred due to contact and joint components are divided. <P>SOLUTION: A half-width likelihood indicating the degree of half-width likeliness of characters in a character line, a double-width likelihood indicating the degree of double-width likeliness, a character blur likelihood indicating the degree of character blur, and a character contact likelihood indicating the degree of character contact are calculated. Pre-segmentation is performed using the character contact likelihood and double-width likelihood, and forced separation is performed using the character blur likelihood and half-width likelihood.
