PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous dispersion of an acrylic modified starch which has a high prolonged storage stability, and to provide a water-based coating composition which is obtained by using the dispersion and by which a coating film having excellent finishing properties, hardness, weatherability and so on can be formed. SOLUTION: The aqueous dispersion is obtained by, in the presence of a starch and/or a modified starch containing a radical-polymerizable unsaturated group, separately graft-polymerizing a radical-polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture for forming a hydrophobic polymer and a radical-polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture for forming a hydrophilic polymer; if necessary, neutralizing carboxy groups in the acrylic modified starch with a basic substance; and performing dispersion in water.
