<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tray device with a placement surface which expands when a tray body is moved to its operating position and contract as desired to be narrowed after expanding, and an image forming apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: By turning the tray body 34 toward the operating position, an auxiliary tray 40 moves from a storage position to an expansion position to expand the sheet member placement surface 35. In some cases, it is necessary to narrow the sheet member placement surface 35 after expanding the sheet member placement surface 35 by moving the auxiliary tray 40 moves from the storage position to the expansion position.
