PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of grasping whether or not a reverse transfer that may occur between an intermediate transfer body and an image carrier has occurred actually, grasping the degree of occurrence of the reverse transfer, preventing the reverse transfer accordingly, and thereby, forming a high quality image. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes: an intermediate transfer belt 8 that temporarily carries a toner image; four image forming units 20 disposed in a line along the rotating direction of the intermediate transfer belt 8; a toner image density detection sensor 90M disposed between the image forming unit 20M where the toner image thereof is primary-transferred first to the intermediate transfer belt 8, and the image forming unit 20C where the toner image thereof is primary-transferred second to the intermediate transfer belt 8; and a density detection sensor 90B disposed on the downstream side of the image forming unit 20B where the toner image thereof is primary-transferred last to the belt 8, in the rotating direction of the intermediate transfer belt. Thereby, regarding the toner image primary-transferred first to the intermediate transfer belt 8, an image density difference between just after the primary transfer and just before the secondary transfer can be grasped.
