PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new descaling method and device for a heat exchanger capable of peeling and collecting scale adhered and accumulated on a heat transfer pipe of the heat exchanger without using chemicals such as cleaning fluid at all while heat use operation is continued without stopping the operation of the heat exchanger. SOLUTION: With respect to a flow of fluid to be heated made to flow in the heat exchanger 1, a flow of hot water introduced from a hot water line 2 to the heat exchanger 1 is inverted from "countercurrent flow" to "parallel flow" to add temperature change to the heat transfer pipe during descaling, and due to a difference of thermal expansion between the heat transfer pipe and scale accompanying the temperature change, fragments of the scale peeled from the pipe wall of the heat transfer pipe are collected in the middle of the hot water line 2 downstream of the heat exchanger 1. The descaling device includes a flow passage switching means comprising three-way valves 6A, 6B, flow passage switching pipe lines 2a, 2b and a gate valve 7; a scale collecting device 4 in which a cleaning circuit 9 is attached to a container 4 having a built-in strainer 4a; and an operation control part 5 switching the flow of heat water introduced to the heat exchanger 1 from "counterflow" to "parallel flow" and then, returning the flow to "counterflow" again.
