PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cooking a lignocellulose material for obtaining pulp of low kappa number in high yield while cutting chemical liquid use and reducing the load on a retrieving boiler. SOLUTION: The method comprises the following process that, prior to feeding a lignocellulose material to a cooking vessel, an alkaline solution containing an active alkali and X (%) of a quinone compound so that the active alkali addition rate of the bone dry weight of the lignocellulose material is 1-5% is added to the lignocellulose material, wherein the quinone compound's concentration Z (Z=X×Y<SP>-1</SP>×10<SP>4</SP>) is 100 ppm or higher (wherein Y (L/kg) is the liquid ratio in the system). The step of treating the lignocellulose material under heating at 80-120°C is provided, followed by additionally adding the alkaline solution to effect cooking the lignocellulose.
