In a method of operating a handheld electronic device (100, 200) including a housing having a fixed display (130b, 230a, 230b) on a surface thereof and a moveable display (130c, 230c) that is configured slide along the surface to variably overlap portions of the fixed display (130b, 230a, 230b), a signal is received from a position sensor (290) adjacent the surface of the housing. A relative position of the moveable display (130c, 230c) with respect to the fixed display (130b, 230a, 230b) is determined in response to the signal from the position sensor (290). An image (710, 720, 810) displayed on the moveable display (130c, 230c) and/or the fixed display (130b, 230a, 230b) is selectively manipulated according to the determined relative position of the moveable display (130c, 230c) to the fixed display (130b, 230a, 230b).
