A method of forming filaments of glass with substantially uniform diameters comprises flowing streams of glass 12 from rows of feeder orifices 14, attenuating the streams into fine filaments 16 and improving the uniform temperature environment of the mouths of the feeder orifices by providing heat conducting means extending alongside each row of orifices 14 adjacent each mouth to conduct heat away from each stream 12 to a heat sink 29 connected to an end of the heat conducting means, the heat conducting means being so constructed as to provide heat conduction paths 32 to the heat sink 29 from orifices relatively closer to the sink which are of at least equal thermal resistance to conduction paths 32 from orifices relatively further from the sink. It is preferred that the heat conduction paths spread to the orifice mouths from a zone of convergence generally central of the length of the heat conducting means. Fin shields 28, of copper, platinum, silver, aluminium or nickel, and connected to water-cooled tubes 29 are interposed in side-by-side parallel relationship between each row or each pair of rows of feeder orifices 14. The fin depth extends from just above the orifice tip to the bottom of the cone 12 from which the filaments are drawn. The fins may be connected to the cooled tube 29 either at one end only or at both ends. To make the heat conduction paths equal slots 30, 31 are cut into the fins. Alternatively, the slots may be filled in with a material having a lower thermal conductivity than the fins, e.g. stainless steel. In an alternative embodiment the feeder is circular in shape and the fins (111) extend radially between the rows of orifices (104), (Fig. 8, not shown). The fins may also be parabolic in shape (Fig. 5, not shown), or have a thicker outer end 121 (Fig. 9, not shown).</p> |
