A plurality of parallel, relatively spaced weld rods are secured together by one or more pairs of tapes 3 (Fig. 5), so that rods severed from the mat carry a tab or tabs (see also Fig. la, not reproduced) formed from the tapes. Apparatus for forming a mat of rods comprises a magazine (Fig. 6) that deposits rods 1 singly into troughs 10 in an endless conveyer 12. Tapes 3 from reels 13 are applied to join the rods 1 together by means of rollers 4. A device 6 intermittently cuts the tapes 3 to form mats, or separates the rods 1 so that each bears one or more labels. A trough 7 collects and rolls the mat. Adhesive tape may be used; gum can be applied or moistened by conventional roller mechanisms located upstream of pressure rollers 4; heatactivated tape may be heated before or by pressure rollers 4. |
