<p>A can end (10) comprising a central panel (12) with a tear panel (20) defined by a frangible score (22). The frangible score (22) has a thickened residual (64) at its venting portion and a vent coin (65) adjacent the venting portion. The thickened residual (64) slows down the propagation of the fracture. The vent coin (65) creates compressive stress at the frangible score (22). The compressive stress forces the tear panel (20) during venting to underlap the central panel (12), thus delaying the advance of the fracture. These features allow the container pressure to be fully relieved before the fracture propagates beyond the venting portion, preventing missiling, i.e. a jutting upward of the tear panel (20) due to the internal pressure of the container.</p> |
