A stowable lifting mechanism for raising loads from the ground or other lower loading level to the floor level of a doorway 11 in the rear wall of a vehicle comprises substantially upright stanchions 10 on either side of the doorway 11, main pillars 12 mounted to slide in the stanchions 10 and subsidiary pillars 15 connected to the main pillars 12 by links 19, 20 pivoted at 21 to 24 to enable a folding platform 14 to throw clear of the vehicle floor. The platform 14 may be raised and lowered by a power unit 31 consisting of an electric motor driving a pump to supply liquid to a ram for controlling cables 29 connected to the pillars 12 over pulleys 30 at the upper end of the stanchions 10. The mechanism may be used to raise loads to the floor level of an opening in a building (not shown). |
