A device for stopping the spindle 1 of an automatic lathe in a predetermined angular position comprises an electromagnetic brake 2 and an index plate 7 attached to the spindle. A locking plunger 9, operated electromagnetically, is adapted to engage notches in the index plate in response to the action of cam discs 13, 16 mounted on a control shaft in the lathe which operate micro-switches 15 and 18 respectively. The closing of micro-switch 15 by the cam 14 energizes the brake electromagnet 2 to brake the spindle. Simultaneously, the time delay relay 19 is energized to actuate the brake motor 4 and magnet of the locking plunger 9 which subsequently contacts the surface of the index plate while the motor 4 slowly turns the spindle 1 until the plunger 9 engages the required notch in the index plate. This movement actuates the micro-switch by means of contact 11 which shuts off the electrical supply to the motor 4 any subsequent movement of the motor 4 being absorbed by the over-riding clutch 6. The next indexing position of the spindle is controlled by means of the disc 16 which actuates switch 18 to re-energize the circuit so as to rotate the spindle by the motor 4. |
