The method involves sending transaction data (TD) from a client (110) to a server (120), and locally producing an authentication characteristic (AM) e.g. optical representation of an input mask (110a), by a token (130) i.e. smartcard, associated with the user for authentication of the transaction data. The authentication characteristic is sent to the server. The transaction data is authenticated by comparing the transaction data received at the server with the authentication characteristic received at the server. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product for authenticating authenticate-requiring transaction data for an electronic transaction (2) a system for authenticating authenticate-requiring transaction data for an electronic transaction (3) a portable data processing medium for producing an authentication characteristic.
