To prevent diverge of the output energy distribution lobe from the optical axis of a laser Q-switched by a rotated resonator reflector, one end of the resonator comprises a plurality of fixed reflecting surfaces Ml, M2, M3, M<SP>1</SP> 1 , M<SP>1</SP> 2 , Fig. 3, and a rotated Q-switching reflector M4, the arrangement of reflectors being such that when the optical system becomes sufficiently aligned for Q-switching to commence, radiation emitted from the active medium 1 on one side of a plane through the optical axis is reflected back to the other side of the plane and vice-versa. Thus an emitted ray RQ becomes a reflected ray JK. As the optical system alignment improves during the period of Q-switching the rays converge into parallelism along the optical axis as shown at SE and LM. Due to the symmetry of the optical system the lobe of output energy distribution lies along the optical axis. Modifications using fewer reflecting surfaces are described, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). |
