A helmet comprises a rigid shell with a headband adjustable for size and with means limiting movement within the shell. Adjustable head straps 403, 405 pass through front and rear tubular members of headband sections 59 and 69, supported in the shell by loops on the ends of central strap 45 which loops pass through saddle straps 61, 67 secured to the headband sections 59, 69 and through slots in plates 51, 53 screwed to the shell. Loops 101 on section 59 pass through slots in plates 105 screwed to the shell. Loops on the ends of two cross straps 45 are also connected to the plates 53 and 105. An inelastic strap 409 is secured by fasteners 411 to the sides of the shell after passing through the front tubular member of section 59 to limit the movement of the headbands. In an alternative form a restraining strap is secured to the shell at both the front and rear. The two head straps are made of plastics material integral with a single cross strap 45, are adjustably connected by elastic straps, and are removably connected to the shell by studs engaging in keyhole slots. The shell has a lining of resilient material and a pad at the crown comprises two layers of material of differing compressibility. |
