<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device on which a user's intention is reflected. <P>SOLUTION: A control unit 45, if any of first keys is depressed in an incoming call waiting state, controls so that a first kind symbol display area 101 for displaying a first kind symbol assigned to the first key and a second kind symbol display area 102 for displaying a second kind symbol assigned to the first key are displayed. The control unit 45, if a second key is depressed while controlling so that the first kind symbol display area 101 and the second kind symbol display area 102 are displayed, executes first processing for the first kind symbol, and controls so that the second kind symbol display area 102 is erased.
