<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a container gripping unit 18 for use in holding a container 4 with a fixing arm 38 and an opening or closing arm 22 to be used for both containers 4A, 4B of different diameters. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This invention relates to a container gripping unit 18 comprising a fixing arm 38, an opening or closing arm 22, a tension coil spring 56 for use in biasing this opening or closing arm 22 toward the fixing arm 38, and a stopper 52 for stopping the opening or closing arm 22 so as to hold a container 4 with the fixing arm 38, and the opening or closing arm 22. Further there is provided a motion guide 40 that can be moved forward or retracted between one position where it is abutted against the container 4 held by the fixing arm 38 and the other position where it is not abutted gainst the container 4, and the motion guide 40 is provided with the stopper 52. In turn, the opening or closing arm 22 is provided with a first engagement part 22b to be engaged with the stopper 52 when the motion guide 40 is kept at its retracting position and a second engagement part 22c to be engaged with the stopper 52 when the motion guide 40 is kept at its forward moving position.
