PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique that starts an image forming operation at suitable timing, in an image forming apparatus which starts the image forming operation before data of one page are completely prepared. SOLUTION: A multifunction machine selects a compression method according to a sort of a copy command (S110 to S130) and sets the number SL of recording start lines to a value C_BL corresponding to the compression method (S140). After start of document reading, whether the number RL of reading lines reaches the number SL of recording start lines is determined (S180), and when the number RL of reading lines reaches the number SL of recording start lines, a recording engine is allowed to execute image forming operation based on the read image data (S190). Further, a suitable value C_BL of the number SL of recording start lines is updated (S290) on the basis of the measurement results of time TB required for reading out a document of one page, time TA required from the start of document reading till the complete preparation of all image data necessary for the image forming operation (S160, S210, S230).
