PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems concerning intermediate compositions which are elastomer seal compatible, not so much contributing to high levels of chlorine in lubricating oil compositions, usable at high concentrations in the lubricating oil compositions, and having demand for sulfurized phenol additives. SOLUTION: There is provided the oil-soluble sulfurized phenol intermediate composition for preparing lubricating oil additives compatible with nitrile seal, wherein the chlorine content of the intermediate composition is less than 1,000 ppm, the sulfur content is at least 4 mass%, and compounds expressed by formula I are contained. In formula I, R indicates a 1-50C hydrocarbyl group, y is an integer of 0-4 and may be different in every aromatic nucleus, n is an integer of 0-20, and x is an integer of 1-7.
