<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To newly provide a self-ignition combustion detection device that can detect the occurrence of self-ignition combustion at an initial stage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: It is revealed that difference can be recognized if waveforms at a first period G1 later than a piston top dead center TDC of combustion stroke are compared, in comparing between pressure inside cylinder waveform during self-ignition combustion at an initial stage and pressure inside cylinder waveform during normal combustion. In regard of this point, in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine for ignition by a spark of an ignition plug, an initial self-ignition determination means S302 is provided for reading out a peak-hold value CPPKH at the first period G1 out of detected values of pressures inside cylinder CP (S301), and determining that the self-ignition combustion at the initial stage is occurring, if the peak-hold value CPPKH becomes larger than a first threshold value TH1.
