PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cosmetic capable of sufficiently exhibiting skin barrier function and hair-protective effects as an intercellular lipid originally possessed by ceramide, and providing good touch feeling. SOLUTION: The cosmetic contains a glycerol compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a mono- or di-valent organic group; and t is 1 or 2) and having 150-2,000 molecular weight, and is especially useful for the cosmetic for protecting the skin.
