<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an EGR amount without a response delay, prevent an increase in an EGR gas amount in a cylinder, and perform combustion with good stability in a cylinder reducing operation of a variable cylinder internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This variable cylinder internal combustion engine is equipped with a plurality of cylinders comprising a cylinder performing EGR takeout and a cylinder not performing EGR takeout. When the engine operating state is transferred to a low load operation, and when a load change rate is a prescribed value or more and a cylinder cut-off operation is performed during execution of EGR, at least one cylinder performing EGR takeout is cutoff. The cutting off of the cylinder performing EGR takeout is performed by stopping fuel injection of the cylinder to be cutoff, and closing of intake and exhaust valves of the cylinder to be cutoff after passage of a prescribed time after the fuel injection is stopped.
