A chromotographic column, suitable for use where the mobile phase is either gas or liquid, comprises two flat adjacent spirally wound layers 2, 3 with a mutual connecting winding around a central aperture 5 at which the radius of curvature of the two spirals is least. This least radius of curvature is preferably at least ten times the radius of the column tubing. In a modification, any even number of spiral layers may be employed, the connecting windings being alternately at the centre and at the periphery but so arranged that the inlet and outlet are both at the periphery. The arrangement may be self-supporting, or may be supported by a mounting plate positioned between layers 2, 3 and having a central aperture corresponding to 5. In order to save space, a suitable detector may be located within aperture 5. In other arrangements, a central heating plate (7) (see Fig. 4, not shown) may be located between spirals 2, 3, or heating and cooling plates (8, 9 respectively) (see Fig. 5, not shown) may be located against the outer faces of spirals 2, 3.
