<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor which detects an object even when the characteristics of a photographic image of the object changes due to the brightness around the object or the difference of the incident angle of light incident on the object, and collation is difficult only with one model pattern, in recognizing the object by pattern matching. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This image processor is provided with: a gradient direction specification part 2 for calculating a value indicating the characteristics of pixels for each pixel on image data; a matching degree calculation part 6 for calculating the matching degree indicating the degree of matching between the feature quantity included in a collation region and a predetermined model pattern; and an object coordinate calculation part 7 for specifying the position of the object on the image based on the calculated matching degree. The matching degree calculation part decides a reference model pattern as a reference when there are several model patterns, and maps the matching information of the model pattern different from the reference model pattern on the matching information of the reference model pattern, and calculates the matching degree.
