PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration in startability, misfire, a pump loss, and an increase in engine vibration, in an engine provided with a variable valve train leaning the position of an operating angle based on the maximum operating angle or minimum operating angle of an intake valve or an exhaust valve. SOLUTION: This control device 1 for the engine includes: an operating angle variable device 10 and a valve-opening phase variable mechanism 58 respectively varying the operating conditions of the intake valve 12 and/or the exhaust valve 13; and an ECU 50 learning the position of the operating angle based on the maximum operating angle or minimum operating angle of the intake valve 12 and/or the exhaust valve 13 of the operating angle variable device 10. After an ignition is in the ON position, the ECU 50 learns the position of the operating angle before the engine starts. Thereby, it is possible to suppress the deterioration in startability, misfire, pump loss, and increase in the engine vibration. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
