<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display apparatus having a high contrast ratio in a front direction. <P>SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal panel including a liquid crystal cell, a first polarizing plate placed on one side of the liquid crystal cell, a second polarizing plate and a third polarizing plate placed on the other side of the liquid crystal cell in an order starting from a side of the liquid crystal cell, and a retardation plate (A) placed between the liquid crystal cell and the second polarizing plate, a refractive index ellipsoid of the retardation plate (A) has a relationship of nx≥ny>nz, a difference (ΔT<SB>2-1</SB>=T<SB>2</SB>-T<SB>1</SB>) between transmittance (T<SB>2</SB>) of the second polarizing plate and transmittance (T<SB>1</SB>) of the first polarizing plate is larger than 0%, a difference (ΔT<SB>3-2</SB>=T<SB>3</SB>-T<SB>2</SB>) between transmittance (T<SB>3</SB>) of the third polarizing plate and the transmittance (T<SB>2</SB>) of the second polarizing plate is 4.0-7.5%, and the third polarizing plate is a linearly polarized light separation type reflective polarizing plate. The liquid crystal panel has the high contrast ratio in the front direction and shows excellent display characteristics as compared with the conventional liquid crystal panel wherein e.g. two polarizing plates placed on both sides of a liquid crystal cell have the same transmittance. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
