PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for effectively detecting erroneous operation of a pressure pump, particularly, an outflow side check valve in a fuel injection system. SOLUTION: This system has a piston 2 in a body part 5, a fuel pressure pump 1 provided with a pump cylinder 6 and a pump chamber 7, a fuel inflow conduit 8 and an fuel outflow conduit 9 in fluid communication with the pump chamber 7. The check valves 8.1 and 9.1 are respectively arranged in the conduits 8 and 9, and the body part 5 is also provided with a temperature measuring device 15 for detecting the temperature of fuel. The fuel outflow conduit 9 is connected to a common pressure accumulator 11, and the fuel flows out of the pump chamber 7 under high pressure. When using this system, when failure is caused in the check valve 9.1, since the fuel is pressurized many times by longitudinally passing through the check valve 9.1, and the temperature becomes the higher temperature than a preset value. The occurrence of failure is detected by comparing the measured fuel temperature with the preset value stored in an analyzer 16 or comparing the fuel temperatures of the respective pumps.
