<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a titanium component having high resistance to both fatigue stress and wear. <P>SOLUTION: A metallic layer 16 is formed on a titanium substrate 14. Next, the metallic layer 16 and the titanium substrate 14 are diffused together to form a diffusion region. The diffusion consolidates the metallic layer 16 through atomic transport to fill microvoids in the metallic layer 16. Thereafter, mechanical working such as peening and rolling is performed to establish a residual stress region 24 that extends through the metallic layer 16, the diffusion region, and at least partially into the titanium substrate 14. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
