A polepiece for a magnetic head is made by polishing a body of sintered oxidic nickel zinc ferrite to form a gap bounding surface for the head, coating the polished surface with a thin layer of glass or vitreous enamel and grinding the body to define a boundary edge of the gap bounding surface. The glass or enamel is matched in respect of machineability and coefficient of expansion with the ferrite. To form a head, two such polepieces may have their glass parts fused together with the ferrite sections at the required separation, and the front face is then ground to provide the correct gap depth. |
