Flash produced at the start of a machining pass on a metal workpiece at an edge 18 transverse to the sides 6, 8 of the pass, is removed by blowing oxygen on to the flash before it has cooled to the point where it can no longer burn in oxygen without preheating. A torch nozzle is shown at 2 at the beginning of a scarfing operation on a steel slab and at 4 when it has effected the pass. The flush formed at the edge 18 of the scarfing pass during the starting operation is removed by oxygen nozzles 10, 12, 14, 16 fixed to the torch support and inclined at 10- 70 degrees to the workpiece surface. The flash at the side 8 of the pass is removed by oxygen nozzles 20, 22, 24 inclined at 30-60 degrees to the workpiece surface and 30-50 degrees with the direction 26. Nozzles 28, 30 may be arranged on the side 6 of the pass inclined at 20-90 degrees with the workpiece surface and 0-70 degrees with direction 26. The apparatus may be used to cut a blind hole at the end of a bar for producing seamless tubes.</p> |
