A method for discovering and registering a serving gateway for an HNB comprising the following steps: the HNB measures the HNB gateway and sends a measurement result to a first HNB gateway; the first HNB gateway selects a second HNB gateway as the serving HNB gateway for the HNB on the basis of the measurement result; the first HNB gateway sends a message to the HNB, indicating address information on the serving HNB gateway for the HNB. The HNB according to the present invention obtains IP address information of each node between the HNB and the HNB gateway by initiating passive measurement between the HNB and the HNB gateway. The first HNB gateway can thus learn about where the HNB locates in an IP transmission network. Moreover, it derives the approximate geographical location of the HNB according to information provided by the operator so that a serving HNB gateway is selected nearby for the HNB.
