The device has a thrust piece (10) guided in a direction of a toothed rack (3) by a thrust piece spring (11). A mechanism (12) magnetically varies thrust piece spring force against the toothed rack. The mechanism comprises a magnet i.e. electromagnet, and an actuator element that is moved by the magnet. The thrust piece spring is supported at an end that is turned away from the toothed rack, at the actuator element. The actuator element is partially formed from a magnetically influenceable material.
