METHOD FOR PRODUCING POLYETHER HYDROXY COMPOUND HAVING CARBOXYL GROUP

<p>Disclosed is a production method which is capable of efficiently, quantitatively and economically introducing a predetermined amount of carboxylic acid into a polyether compound. Specifically disclosed is a method wherein a polyether hydroxy compound having a carboxyl group is produced by reacting a polyether hydroxy compound and an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride at a certain ratio. The production method is characterized by comprising: a first step wherein a reaction product is obtained by reacting the polyether hydroxy compound with a part of the unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or the unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of a radical initiator substantially in the absence of water; and a second step wherein the polyether hydroxy compound having a carboxyl group is obtained by reacting the reaction product obtained by the first step with the remainder of the unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or the unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride in the presence of a radical initiator in the co-presence of water.</p>
