Process for converting raw gases in which the autothermal gasification of carbon containing feedstock arises at a temperature of 1300-1800[deg] C and pressure of 10 Mpa (100 bar), where the carbon containing feedstock is solid or liquid fuels for gasification of the prepared residual and waste materials or biomass, a gasification chamber (3) is used for cooling- and quenching chamber downstream (9) for cooling the hot raw gas that is subdivided into different zones, and the high temperature of the raw gases entering in the cooling and quenching area for carrying out a non-catalytic carbon monoxide-high temperature conversion to carbon dioxide and hydrogen, comprises cooling the hot raw gases in a first zone by supplying water vapor or water vapor/water mixture at a temperature of 1200-1300[deg] C, where the conversion reaction is carried out up to thermodynamic equilibrium, cooling the 1200-1300[deg] C hot raw gas in a second zone by supplying water vapor, water or water vapor-water mixture at 900-1100[deg] C in order to carry out a further carbon monoxide conversion, and further cooling the 900-1100[deg] C hot, converted gas. An independent claim is included for a device for performing the above process, in which the gasification chamber is a cooling- and quenching chamber downstreams that are subdivided into different temperature zones.
