A polycondensate, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, is produced in a rotating, cylindrical drum 1 associated with stationary oblique guide plates 6 which touch the lower internal wall of the rotating drum, the material to be polycondensed being moved from one end of the drum to the other by the ploughing action of the guide blades. The drum is surrounded by a double-walled jacket 4, 5, which is supplied with heating fluid. Alternatively, drum 1 may be heated by electrical radiators. A source to vacuum is connected to sleeve 17. The precondensate is fed into the closed end of the drum through tube 13. The rotation of the drum carries layers of the material upwards and downwards in an approximately circular trajectory, and it is simultaneously moved stepwise to the right by the guide plates. The polycondensate is ejected from the open end 3 of the drum, and removed by screw 16. The guide plates are connected to one another and to the stationary heating jacket 5 by a tube 7 which should preferably be heated so as to heat the plates by conduction. The heating can be made more efficient if the guide plates have double walls and their cavities are connected to the heating space of tube 7. Baffle plates or rotary agitators may be inserted between the guide plates 6. |
