Process for the preparation of 1-hexene consisting in effecting the oligomerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a vanadium complex having the formula: (arene)2VX wherein the term arene represents benzene or mono-, di-, or tri-alkylsubstituted benzene, V is a vanadium ion with a low oxidation state, and X is an anion selected from Cl, Br and I halide ions, or from non-coordinated anions such as B(Ar)4, AlCl4, carboxylates and sulfonates.
