The device (1) has a sensor (2) arranged at a side of a highway and emitting an infrared beam towards a reflector (3). The reflector is arranged on both sides of the sensor. A communication or warning unit e.g. Global system for Mobile Communicationtype sensor (6) and buzzers (7, 8, 9), actuates the sensor during occultation of the beam. The sensor is integrated in a circuit comprising an electric energy source (4) that is supplied with power by a solar panel (5). An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a passage of a vehicle against traffic on a highway.
