A grid type electrostatic precipitator/collector includes a narrow air strea m, various external pre-discharger designs with the ability to agglomerate sub-micron particles into larger particles, and one or more collection chambers (fields). In one embodiment, multiple external pre-dischargers are included such that it is unnecessary t o include any discharge electrodes in the collection chamber.
