PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a vector expression reproducing contrast and blur of characters and graphics that are non-uniformly changed in the direction and concentration of gradation. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus acquires a contour line of a similar color region from an input image and sets a plurality of characteristic points based on the contour line. The contour line is divided for each characteristic point and pixel values of a plurality of sampling points within the relevant contour lines divided can be obtained. Thereafter, the vector expression is generated by defining direction and attribute of gradation on the basis of the relevant pixel values acquired and designating these as the color of the vector expression representing the contour line for each divided characteristic point.
