[Also in Division A5E] A monoarylphenol in which the aryl group has 6-18 carbon atoms and is bound to the phenol nucleus by a nuclear carbon atom, is isomerized to corresponding position isomers by heating to 160-250‹ C. in the presence of an acid-activated Montmorillonite clay. The aryl group may be, for example, phenyl, tolyl, naphthyl, cumyl, anisyl. phenoxyphenyl, xylyl, butylphenyl, amylphenyl, decylphenyl, dodecylphenyl and naphthylphenyl. The isomerization may be carried out in the presence of a diluent, e.g. phenol, If desired, a phenylphenol may be simultaneously alkylated and isomerized by reacting a monophenylphenyl with an alkylating agent in the presence of the Montmorillonite clay. Examples are given of the isomerization of (a) o-phenylphenol to m- and p-phenylphenol; (b) p-phenylphenol to o- and m-phenylphenol, and (c) the reaction of o-phenylphenol and o-sec.-butylphenol in the presence of Montmorillonite to give 3-sec.-butyl-5-phenylphenol. The arylphenols may be carbamoylated, e.g. 3-sec.-butyl-5-phenylphenol is treated with methyl isocyanate in the presence of triethylamine to give 3-biphenyl-5-sec.-butyl-N-methylcarbonate. |
