PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a developing means 5 including a developer carrier 25 that feeds developer T to an image carrier 1 and develops an electrostatic latent image, a developer feeding member 24 that feeds the developer in contact with the developer carrier, and a developer accommodating chamber that accommodates the developer to form an image on a recording medium P, where the remaining developer amount detection in the developing means is stably performed with high accuracy, irrespective of a use environment or an unattended state of the developing means. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a rotary 50 for changing an attitude of the developing means 5 to a first attitude C in which developer T in the developer accommodating chamber 21 is feedable to the developer feeding member 24, and to a second attitude E in which the developer T having been located above a nip between the developer feeding member 24 and a developing roller 25 drops from the nip. In the first attitude C of the developing means 5, an electrostatic latent image is developed, in the second attitude E of the developing means 5, detection of the remaining amount of the developer is carried out.
