PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophotographic photosensitive member which suppresses breaking on the drive transmission flange side in a photosensitive layer and also suppresses the occurrence of image defects. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is provided which includes: an electrophotographic photosensitive member obtained by forming a photosensitive layer on a cylindrical substrate; a rotary drive system which is connected to a first end in the axial direction of the electrophotographic photosensitive member and transmits rotating power to the electrophotographic photosensitive member; a bearing flange which supports through a gap a second end located opposite the first end in the axial direction; and a pressing member which presses the first end in the electrophotographic photosensitive member harder than the second end. The photosensitive layer includes a photoconductive layer and a surface layer, wherein the thickness of at least one of the photoconductive layer and the surface layer becomes gradually larger as proceeding from the second end toward the first end, and the thickness of the first end in the photosensitive layer is larger than the thickness of the second end in the photosensitive layer.
