<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle travel safety apparatus that satisfactorily reconciles prevention of excessive warnings with accurate contact avoidance by precisely detecting stationary objects that do not obstruct traveling, such as road markers, and suppressing relevant contact avoidance operations. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vehicle travel safety apparatus, which detects objects according to reflected waves of electromagnetic waves transmitted about one's own vehicle, determines whether there is any possibility of contact between the own vehicle and the objects, and if determining that there is any possibility, actuates a contact avoidance support means for supporting contact avoidance, is configured to determine whether or not the objects are a stationary object (S18), then if the determination is in the affirmative and there are a plurality of stationary objects, determine whether the stationary objects are continuous (S20, S22), and if determining that the plurality of stationary objects each have a reflection level L not less than a first predetermined value La and a width W not more than a second predetermined value Wb, and are continuous, makes the determination that there is any possibility of contact less asserted (S24 to S28).
