<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition which forms a coating film having excellent adhesion, water resistance and alcohol resistance. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The aqueous coating composition includes an emulsion comprising a core layer having a copolymer containing 20-80 mass% of an aromatic vinyl monomer (a-1) unit, 20-80 mass% of a 1-4C alkyl group-bearing alkyl (meth)acrylate (a-2) unit and 0-60 mass% of another vinyl monomer (a-3) unit, and a shell layer having a copolymer having 20-80 mass% of an aromatic vinyl monomer (b-1) unit, 5-40 mass% of a 6-14C alkyl group-containing alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer (b-2) unit and 0-75 mass% of another vinyl monomer (b-3) unit.
