The invention relates to the field of gene expression and the production of proteins using transformed host cells and recombinant DNA vectors. The invention describes a method for expressing target proteins, characterized in that folding-helper proteins, which are also called chaperones, are co-expressed. The co-expressed chaperones are selected from a list of individual folding-helper proteins and a multiplicity of combinations of two, three or more proteins (chaperone toolbox) are formed which makes possible an expression of grouped chaperone genes having heterologous genes for target proteins. In addition, the invention relates to the use of plasmids which comprise polynucleotides which code for folding-helper proteins (chaperones), wherein the plasmid is capable of expressing the folding-helper proteins (chaperones); and it relates to a method of selecting the folding-helper protein-coding polynucleotides and combining two, three or more thereof at random.
